By jamesfJanuary 13, in IH Trucks. Hey guys, our church just recently bought a IH truck with a TE engine. I found out today that every time they start the truck cold they have to let it run for about 30 minutes before the throttle will work. I assume the computer won't let the RPMs increase until the engine warms up.

Does this sound normal? They say it has to hit - degrees before it will go. No that does not sound normal. I maintained school buses for many years and many had the TE. They all moved with cold engines. There may be a sitting in the computer that is causing this but you should be able to have it reprogrammed if that is the case. I assume it has an auto transmission in it. It sounds like they are holding the accelerator pedal down when they are trying to start it.

These engines will only idle if you have your foot on the accelerator when starting, this keeps the engine from reving up with cold oil. If you have an old school driver we are trained to "give it a little fuel when cold", if it's a diesel. If it is a gasoline engine we were trained to "pump the accelerator when cold" this would set the automatic choke, and add a squirt of fuel in the intake.

This is not the case with the Power Stroke with electronic fuel injection. Let us know if this fixes the problem. I understand that thought, but it won't come out of idle until the engine warms up to degrees, which takes about 30 minutes.

Have you tried to start it without putting your foot on the accelerator, while you are starting it? I have an old 7.
